Boreas Elected for Reading Promotion!

Posted on February 17, 2020

Founded in 2012, the Dutch National Reading Coalition (Leescoalitie) promotes and stimulates reading in schools in the Netherlands.

Every two years, the Reading Coalition publishes an anthology with excerpts from well-known Dutch children’s and young adult books. This year’s edition features an excerpt from Boreas en de vijftien vrienden (Boreas and the Fifteen Friends), the final book of the Boreas series. I am beyond stoked and proud that my book has been chosen to promote reading in schools because… well, this is a children’s writer’s dream! A national acknowledgment that top educators in the Netherlands believe that my book will stimulate students to read. I couldn’t wish for more!

The free anthology, Een stuk! Meer (One Piece! More), was published in January 2020 and will be spread among 4,000 teachers, 1,500 student teachers and all educational officers of every public library in the Netherlands. The anthology is divided in themes and  Boreas en de vijftien vrienden has been added to the theme SUSTAINABILITY. Because, yes! That is a big one in my book (think oceans, think plastic soup!). Every excerpt comes with a lesson plan aimed at reading comprehension and a link to book the author for a school visit. How cool is that?

I am super proud! The anthology has a record print run as it has been ordered massively by schools and libraries. I hope with all my heart that the anthology and my excerpt will show many many young people the path toward the joy of reading.

Birthday Present

Posted on July 21, 2019

Kinderboekenweek-TIPTo celebrate my birthday (and because the book is flying out the stores!), my wonderful editor at Ploegsma Children’s Books just let me know they started the next print run for Boreas en de zeven zeeën. So… YAY, birthday!

I have also received a copy of the lesson plans that CPNB, the foundation for collective promotion of the Dutch book and organizer of the Dutch Children’s Book Week since 1954, had stellar educators make to support teachers of every elementary school in the Netherlands. Super exciting and I have designed my school visits with these plans in mind, so they seamlessly add to the wonderful work of teachers and their endeavors to promote reading and children’s books in their classrooms. Requests for school visits are coming in quickly, so that’s a good thing, too!

Here’s a video by the public library of Zaanstad (in Dutch) on why everyone should read Boreas en de zeven zeeën

Write Your Story – Cinnamongirl

Posted on May 10, 2019

Writer friends! All friends! I am still glowing from the Bay Area Book Festival, which was a great success in no small part thanks to the brave young women of Cinnamongirl Inc.

Laura Atkins, Brayona Travis, Innosanto Nagara

I approached Cinnamongirl Inc. to find youth moderators for my middle grade and young adult sessions. And I got them! I am so honored to have met Renée Richard and these exceptional girls. I am in awe of what they did, stepping out of their comfort zone and onto the stage, rocking at interviewing accomplished authors. And I’m in awe of how Renée guides the girls to a future brimming with opportunities and possibilities.

Now, Cinnamongirl Inc. is kicking off their Write Your Story program. I am reaching out to you, my friends in the publishing industry, to support and add value to this amazing and inspiring organization.

What is Write Your Story?

How many books, films, tv shows, news stories were written by black women last year? The year before that?

How many stories featured a black woman as the protagonist?

Cinnamongirl Inc. contributes to the national narrative by focusing, in particular, on emerging black women writers. In so doing, Cinnamongirl Inc also supports the development of all writers of color.

Cinnamongirl Inc. believes, I believe with them, that honing the development of writers will accelerate the inclusion and equity of black women’s lives and stories in every aspect of society.

To accomplish that, Cinnamongirl Inc. provides:

  • Instruction illuminating basic storytelling elements
  • Mini mastery lessons
  • Inspirational quotes and guidance
  • Writing prompts for journal writing and story starters
  • Recommended reading
  • Resources for continued development
  • A supportive community for writers of all levels

The writers create:

  • Monthly submissions between 500-1,500 words
  • Final submission of a 1,500-word story in one of the supported genres by June
  • A submission ready for another writing contest publication

Help me spread the word! Help these girls destined for greatness!

Bay Area Book Festival

Posted on May 1, 2019

What I am doing these days? Getting ready for an exciting, if not thrilling Bay Area Book Festival, for which I put together the children’s and young adult program. A stellar lineup of authors and illustrators, from the quirkiest picture books to the most gripping young adult novels: Cindy Derby, Andrea Tsurumi, Tania De Regil, Mylo Freeman, Rana DiOrio, Andrew Smith, Benny Lindelauf, Gennifer Choldenko, Innosanto Nagara, Laura Atkins, Steve Bramucci, Justina Ireland, Lee Wind, Cindy Pon, Zoraida Córdova and many many more. Two days of amazing panels and interviews and hilarious contests.

New this year? Most of our middle grade and young adult panels moderators and interviewers are all local students! They come from Malcolm X Elementary School to Albany Middle School to Berkeley and Oakland International High Schools, and the powerful young women of Cinnamongirl, Inc and the brave students of the International Congress of Youth Voices.

More excitement? The Literary Death Match will have its first ever middle grade edition and young adult edition at the Bay Area Book Festival. 4 Authors. 3 Judges. 2 Rounds. 1 Champion. And all sorts of hilarity in between. Middle grade and young adult authors compete with each other with their most electric writing, ruthlessly judged by students from Oakland International High School and from Cinnamongirl, Inc. It’s going to be a blast!

And three students of Albany Middle School will interview J.C. Cervantes for a live taping of the Book Club for Kids podcast of award-winning journalist and author Kitty Felde

In short: be there! May 4 and 5 in Downtown Berkeley! All youth younger than 18 free! And all children and middle grade sessions free for everyone! Below are the festival guides for children and middle grade and for young adult:

BOREAS AND THE SEVEN SEAS Core Title for the Dutch National Children’s Book Week 2019

I had high hopes, of course, when the theme for the upcoming Dutch National Children’s Book Week (October 2 – 13, 2019) was announced: Travel Along! / Reis mee! And yes!
