Just One More Day To Go!

Posted on November 30, 2011

One more day to go before the second Amsterdam Literary Death Match. I’ve told you how it works: 4 writers, 3 judges, 2 rounds and 1 epic finale. I know who I will vote for: Fantasy-fictionista Mina Witteman, author of The Soul Snatcher, The Weed Man and Dark Fiber. Hey? That’s me! Right, it is me! Unveiling just a shred of my strategy to win (and those who know me know that I’m merciless if it comes to winning)… I will be reading from my new and burning YA thriller THE WEED MAN. Prepare for a scare, people! The smell of weed and the stink of burning flesh will linger for a long, long while in the great Old West. The Booktunes Blog will play my anthem while…

33 1/3 – Swordfishtrombones (via erik at booktunes)

Posted on September 16, 2011

Don’t you just love Tom Waits? I know I do, and so does Booktunes. Booktunes is about to publish the next batch of great books with music, starting with Harstad’s Buzz Aldrin, What Happened to You in All the Confusion? and — Yay! One of my favorite writers — Andrew Smith’ In the Path of Falling Objects. Two epic novels with epic playlists! Stay tuned! Awaiting the new Tom Waits album I put his Swordfishtrombones on the recordplayer and took David Smay's booklet by the same name from the ever growing Booktunes pile. The book is part of the 33 1/3 series, a collection of books each focusing on one more or less legendary album.  The book is divided by chapters titled the same…

Why Writers Rock

Posted on November 1, 2010

These past few months my life seems to revolve around words and chords, around writing and music. It made me rethink the name of my blog and my dear friend Jay unwittingly told me what it should be: Writers Rock. Words come in multiples as I am working on the revision of my thriller Dark Fiber. One day I hit 5,000 words and the next day I don’t even come close to a mere 500. But no matter how many words do find their way from inside my head to my manuscript, music accompanies them all. If I am on a roll, I switch my iTunes controls to repeat and listen to the same song over and over again, until I almost fall in a…

Californian view: Dr. Frank goes YA

Posted on September 2, 2010

While on my way to California I had to prepare for a masterclass – Finding and Revising Your Protagonist’s Voice in YA Literature – I was to attend at a writers’ conference in Los Angeles. One of the assignments was reading King Dork, the very very witty debut of Frank Portman, a.k.a. Dr. Frank of the Mr. T Experience. So I packed my bags, loaded King Dork on my e-book reader and started the long journey west. The book turned out everything you need to brighten up the seemingly endless and boring flight from Amsterdam to San Francisco. Moreover, it turned out to be an excellent book to be reviewed for Booktunes, Erik de Loor’s new website that brings together books and music. I…
